History and Interesting Facts

Čertovka, a branch of the Vltava River separating the Vltava bank from Kampa Island in Prague, is an adapted mill race for the former Lesser Town mills. The street is named after the seminary building intended for students from Upper and Lower Lusatia. The houses above Čertovka formed the periphery of Lesser Town and were the dwellings of burghers and craftsmen.

The house where the Čertovka Prague restaurant and pub are located was built before 1620 in late Renaissance style. The street facade was rebuilt in classical style. The vaulted cellar used to be a forge, and the space of the current salon was a carpentry workshop dealing with the repair of mill transmission wheels. The narrow entrance alley is the last preserved fire alley in Lesser Town.
